The 2008 National Youth Art Month event – ‘School Flags Across the U.S….Flying High!’ This is the twenty-second consecutive year that this event is being held. Once again the flags will be flown in a place of prominence in Washington, DC. Flags are flown at a special Congressional Arts Caucus Breakfast as part of the National Arts Advocacy Day Conference, which is attended by U.S. Representatives, Senators, and their aides, as well as numerous representatives of arts organizations nationwide.
Every West Virginia art teacher is encouraged to have their students participate in the state flag design contest. It is a great public relations opportunity for the WV Youth Art Month program and great publicity for the school and community from which the design is selected. In addition to the DC events, the state flags will also be flown at the NAMTA Convention and the NAEA Convention.
SUGGESTED TIMELINE:
October to mid-November, 2007 - Have your students work on flag designs for the state competition. Please use the form provided to run off additional copies as the entries must be submitted on this form only. Please make sure all information at the bottom of the form is clear and legible as certificates are made from this information. Work may be done in any media, but keep in mind that it must be able to be recreated in fabric. As a suggestion, cut construction paper works well to simulate working with cut fabric pieces. You may also encourage your students to keep the design simple (with little or no shading, etc.) Use your best judgment when deciding on the media and how you will present the project to your particular grade level/s. The national theme is ‘Start with Art, Learn for Life’ and may be used for generating ideas. Also, the WVAEA Board of Directors encourages teachers to have their students focus on the VISUAL ARTS instead of the arts in general.
November 16, 2007 – Select the design/s you wish to submit for state competition. Limit entries submitted to 10 per school! Please send a clearly printed or typed list of the ten students’ names for their certificates to be made. On a separate sheet, write the t\en students names and grade level as well as total number of students who participated in this contest at your school. If you would like some extra blank certificates for these students, please indicate this on your list or contact the event coordinator, Ronda Albright. Send out your ten entries in time to meet the receipt deadline of Friday, November 23, 2007.
NOVEMBER 23, 2007 – DEADLINE! The entries MUST RECEIVE your entry/s by this date….NO EXCEPTIONS. Winners will be notified in December. All students participating will receive certificates by the end of the school year. Mail your 10 best entries to:
Ronda Albright c/o Berkeley Heights Elementary, 726 Hack Wilson Way, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
